About Mustang

Introduction

The name “Mustang” is a Tibetan word that means “Plain of Aspiration. Mustang is one of the most renowned trekking and pilgrimage destination of Nepal. It covers an area of 3,573 sq. Km and has a population of 13,452. The headquarters of Mustang is Jomsom. It is a homeland to some of the world’s tallest peaks that include 8000-meter tall Dhaulagiri and Annapurna

Mustang divides into two regions- Lower and upper Mustang. Lower Mustang has been a popular pilgrimage destination for more than a century, while the upper Mustang has recently been popular among tourists. Upper Mustang was under restricted area until 1992. Mustang has deserted vegetation around the Himalayas, beautiful valleys, and deepest Georges. It is a trekking Paradise, as Upper Mustang is the forgotten landmarks in the Tibetan Plateau of Nepalese Himalayas. Lo-Manthang, Salome, Baragung Muktichhetra are within the Upper Mustang region. Among them, Lo Manthang resites at an altitude of 3,840m, which is the major highlight on Mustang trek. Lo-Manthang is culturally rich in Tibetan heritages; it incorporates many Tibetan linguistic influences. It’s a homeland to Thakali peoples who have a unique culture of Nepali and Tibetan synthesis.

Many subtropical palm trees, barren lands, monotonous geographies, etc. are a significant specialization of Lo-Manthang.
Additionally, Lo-Manthang of Upper Mustang trek is the only place in Nepal, with its ceremonial King. Villages of Lo-Manthang is renowned for its Mud-Brick walls, king’s palace, gompa, ancient structures, and genetic geographies. Monasteries like Jampa Gompa, Lhakhang, Chodey Gompa, Thubchen gompa, are important cultural sites of this region. Similarly, there is another monastery Choprang Gompa, which is famous as the New Gompa.
